SEO Tips:  Long Tail, Title Tags and my favorite pen.

I just bought something off the internet and I think it serves as a  great, real-life, example how HUMAN beings actually use the internet.  Sometimes all the SEO “gurus” sorta forget the SEO basics.  Which is why I run this website. 

I want to help real people, make real money from the internet.  And I’m not a “guru”-I’m a real life guy in Austin, Texas who has, thru lots of trial and error, managed to gain clients via the web. 

 (I run a mortgage company…. http://www.mylendingplace.com so I cut my teeth in a very competitive market.)

Here’s the pen story:  I have a favorite pen.  We all do but few people are as OCD as me to admit on a SEO blog.  Long story short, Bic decided to “upgrade” their pens about a year ago and didn’t bother to ask me. 

You know the rest of the story…the upgrade sucks.  Suddenly all my black pick pens around my place become priceless.  I’m not even sure why…other than journaling and check writing I really don’t write much with pens, I’m more a keyboard kind-of-guy.

So today I decided to do something about it other than complain.  I decided to ‘GOOGLE IT.”  Because that’s what people do…people Google stuff they are looking for.  Because really, all SEO is making your website visible to Google searches.   It’s not easy, and it’s not hard.   If you want success overnight then it’s really hard.   But if you’re willing to invest 20-30 minutes into your website each day it’s a great way to generate revenue and profit.

So I Google’d “old style bic pens”  And guess what-somebody actually optimized their website for people with pen OCDs:

Blah blah blah later…I bought it via Staples.com and now- I’m going to be happy for at least the next 3 hours.  Yeah me.

SEO TIPS:
#1)  Serious buyers Google specifically.  So stop chasing the most competitive keyword in your market.  If you run a mortgage company, don’t go after “mortgage” go after “Austin Mortgage Company.”  This is why you really should consider the long-tail in any SEO campaign.   What’s long tail?  It’s the slow progression of searches as one becomes more specific.   For example, pens would be “short tail”  (it’s the broadest keyword)……………………………………………………..and all the way down you have the VERY long tail keyword phrase “old style Bic pen.”  

 You’re going to make most of your money in the mid to short tail so that’s probably what you should optimized your website for. 

#2)  Notice the URL and the Title tags are optimized for the keyword that I Google’d.   Don’t ignore title tags and URL keywords-because they are very important.   Read that last sentence again.  Title tags are really important.  If you called me it’s one of the FIRST things I would look for.  Followed by your matching URL keywords.
