Sorry for the large image but I wanted to illustrate something very important. Remember, search engine optimization (SEO) is not something you do once…it’s something you continue to do. It’s much like getting into shape physically. It takes consistency and diligence.
One way to improve your SERP results is to simply test to see what’s working and what’s not. At Jakerbaker, our motto is “SEO is not an event, it’s a process.”
So take a look at this image and tell me what you think. It’s an actual screen-shot of a real time visitor to my mortgage website, www.mylendingplace.com.
Notice anything particularly interesting? If you’re a novice Search Engine Optimization Student you’ll probably just notice the Google Keywords “Mortgage Broker Austin Texas“…after all, most SEO people focus on keywords.
Yes, keywords are important. But that’s not what I’m taking about here. Yes, getting on the front page of Google is also important. But, everybody knows that already…
Look closer….
Perhaps you noticed the geographical indicator after someone searched “mortgage brokers”. Chances are this Google searcher started with “mortgage brokers” and added the geographical indicator “Austin Texas” when they didn’t find what they were looking for.
Yes, geographical indicators are another important topic but that’s not the purpose of this post.
Take one last look.
Hint: How long did this searcher stay on the www.mylendingplace.com page (index page) before they initiated a mortgage rate quote.
8 seconds.
Something to think about when you build (or re-build) your website! There are all kinds of Google-searchers and the “trick” with SEO is to develop a quality website that brings ALL kinds of people to your website. And this includes the 8 second searcher.
Remember, getting people to do something once they land on your page is one of the least discussed topics in SEO. This is called “On site SEO.” There’s Off-site SEO and there’s On-Site SEO. You need both. Yin/Yang.
Afterall, who cares if you get 1M hits on your website but nobody does anything once they land. This means SEO should really be measured in the amount of things people do (leads, calls) once they get to your site. Hits are important, but so are getting leads and in-bound phone calls.
Is SEO expensive.? Yes….but losing business is also expensive.
Is your website designed to help the ADD searcher? If not, you’re losing business. Most people only stay on a website for less than 15 seconds before they decide to go deeper or abort.
